Pyrosis, popularly known as heartburn, is a condition in which a person feels a painful sensation somewhere in the esophagus due to gastric acid. The pain could also affect the chest, as well as the jaw, throat and neck. If not treated properly, heartburn could actually be cause of chronic cough or asthma. Thus, it is imperative to pay attention when a person seems to suffer from heartburn.

The first step, of course, is diagnosing heartburn. Heartburn is categorically a gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). It means that heartburn could be diagnosed with symptoms as the sole basis. GRED occurs because stomach acid and bile moves back into the esophagus, which mainly causes that painful sensation. The most common symptom related with heartburn is the said painful or burning sensation, usually felt in the chest. Some other symptoms include wheezing, insomnia, abdominal pain and choking. Heartburn is sometimes mistaken as a mild heart attack. However, medical attention is needed as serious cases of heartburn could mean having a heart problem already.

In certain instances, GERD could be diagnosed using some medical techniques that serve as confirmatory tests.

One of those is the Upper Gastrointestinal series, composed of a series of x-rays done after the patient has taken a barium solution. The barium solution helps in determining the presence of esophageal reflux illness.

Another method is through the biopsy test. In this procedure, a small tissue of the esophagus is taken that is to be checked for cancer, swelling or other problems.

Endoscope test could also be done by a doctor. A tube with a small camera is inserted through the mouth to see if there are problems in the stomach and esophagus.

If a case of heartburn is confirmed already, the next practical thing to know is the cure of this digestion problem.

One of the most effective treatments for heartburn is engaging in physical activities. If you engage yourself in physical activities, the digestion system would not encounter any problem like heartburn. The calories and fats are consumed and burned easily. The food consumed, thus, is easily digested by the body.

Another treatment you can try is drinking a glass of milk. Milk has calcium, which helps neutralize the acid in the stomach and esophagus. Drinking a ginger tea can also help ease the painful sensation related with heartburn as well.

Antacids, which come in different brands, could also be an option is you think it works better in your case. Either way, you are sure to get rid of that discomfort brought about by heartburn.

The best thing to do is to prevent the occurrence of heartburn by avoiding acidic and spicy food items as much as you can. These two are the top reasons why heartburn happens, and avoiding too much of those would mean doing yourself a healthy favor.

Do not neglect any case of heartburn, especially now that you know a number of treatments already for the disease. Or better yet, live a healthy lifestyle to prevent any form of digestive problem to happen.
